November … the Month of Opportunity (Woods-n-Water -- November 2003) November means the beginning of changes here in the Everglades. The first of the cold fronts bring down the snow birds and much cooler weather. As the water cools off, the fishing does not. It does change. November has everything to offer. This is the last real month for big snook and big tarpon. The snook are probably the most aggressive that you will find them. They are eating ferrous and are at their maximum fitness. They have passed the spawning season, recovered there strength and are fattening for their migration offshore. There is a staggering difference between the fight of a big November linesider and one caught in the spring/summer. This is time for a little heavier tackle if you really want to photograph the fish. Personally, I can not give up the lighter stuff … it is just too much fun. The tarpon that migrate will be heading out by the middle of next month, but there are still plenty of resident fish to tangle with however. Keep you eye out, like the snook, they will be feeding heavy before the leave!! The action in November is wonderful. It is not unusual to catch over 100 fish on a trip to the flats. Mixed in will be lots of trout mackerel, ladyfish, jacks and bluefish. Watch out however, the tarpon are still here will be on the flats chasing the “ladys”. Big schools of large drum will move up and down the rivers with the tides. Sometimes there are hundreds of fish in the schools. Listen closely. You will actually hear them “drumming” as they move through the river feeding. Redfish are given this month on the bars. November is the month of opportunity. I would not miss it. While live bait is plentiful. It is hard to beat light tackle jigging for all around great action. Tight lines!!! HOME
